TWO GUYS WHO GOLF | COURSE REVIEW
It’s not every day you come across a stone wall guarding a green,
and it’s not every day you face a hole that’s intimidatingly short…
If Coyote Lakes Golf Club was a house or a studio loft, the real-estate
nerds would be talking about its character

Project Overview

Coyote Lakes is a residential community originally developed by Pulte Homes, the development includes 500 single family homes and a small commercial/retail component. The course was co-designed by Forrest Richardson and Arthur Jack Snyder.

The course measures 6,300-yards and plays to a par-71. The entire course serves as a drainageway for the community. The course is set along the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix, Arizona. Five of the holes border the Agua Fria, a natural preserve setting.

Our approach at Coyote Lakes was to accentuate the golf holes by lowering them into the natural contours of the site. With the course low, and residential areas higher, the golfer feels comfortably secluded from the homes, yet winds through neighborhoods as the round progresses. As noted, several holes flank the natural river open space. By giving the course a pace and rhythm, the result are strings of holes which open on wide areas, and then descend again into the “canyons” which fall between residential areas. To break up the traditional feel of housing to either side, fairways occasionally border one another. This gives the course less of a manufactured look and feel. The golfer feels more as if the course was their first — with homes built around it at a later date.
